How to Register for an AUSkey

An AUSkey can make it easier than ever to deal with tax and accounting issues. How? Adelaide accountant Kym Nitschke explains what you need to do to register for an AUSkey.

As the Internet finds more and more applications, most people are moving away from the traditional postal system. Just about anything can be done online these days!

In line with the paperless movement, your Business Activity Statement (BAS) is now web based. When you lodge one BAS statement electronically, the ATO will stop sending paper copies unless you call and ask for them.

To receive your statement electronically, however, you need an AUSkey.

What is an AUSkey?

An AUSkey is a unique key that identifies you when you handle communications between your business and the government. Instead of having to memorise multiple usernames and passwords for many purposes, your AUSkey is essentially a master key that makes your tasks a lot more convenient and efficient.

In short, an AUSkey will make it easier for you to ensure that your business is compliant, legal and thriving.

To receive an AUSkey, you simply need to visit the site of the Australian Business Register here.

At this page, you’ll see some instructions and a yellow button at the bottom of the page.

Click on “Register for an AUSkey” and follow these steps:

1. Comply with the prompts to enter your ABN (Australian Business Number), TFN (tax filing number) and email. Your full name and date of birth are also needed.

2. Select “Administrative AUSkey”.

3. Take note of the reference number and activation code given by printing or saving the page.

4. Check your email and click on the link provided.

5. Enter the activation code after following that link, and you’re all set!

Let’s back up for a second: what if you don’t enter your TFN (tax file number)?

Well, that step is optional, but the process is much easier when you do enter it. If you choose not to, then simply call 1300 AUSkey (1300 287 539). After providing a few more details to confirm your identity, you can complete the process to register for an AUSkey over the phone.

Hold onto the reference number you received during the process so that you can contact the Register in case there is a problem with your AUSkey registration.

Don’t let sorting out your business details cause you a headache! Let Nitschke Nancarrow guide you. Contact us on (08) 8379 9950 or send me an email to learn more.
