Frequently asked questions about tax in Adelaide

How much does a tax return cost in Adelaide?

It depends entirely on complexity. A straightforward individual return with salary income and a few deductions is a modest fixed fee. A business owner with a company, a trust and an investment property is a different piece of work altogether. We quote before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When is my tax return due?

If you lodge yourself, 31 October. If you lodge through a registered tax agent like us, you generally get until 15 May the following year — provided you are on our lodgement list before 31 October. That extension is one of the quieter benefits of using an agent.

Should I set up a company or a trust?

It depends on what you are trying to protect and how you want profits distributed. A discretionary trust offers flexibility in distributing income across a family group; a company gives a flat tax rate and a clean structure for retained earnings. Most business owners we work with end up with some combination. It is worth an hour of advice before you commit, because unwinding the wrong structure later is expensive.

What can I claim as a deduction?

The test is whether the expense was incurred in earning your income, and whether you can substantiate it. Beyond that it varies enormously by occupation — a nurse, a tradesperson and a company director have very different deduction profiles. We will ask the right questions rather than expect you to know them.

I have not lodged for a few years. What happens now?

More common than you would think, and very fixable. The ATO is considerably more accommodating to people who come forward than to people it has to chase. We will work out what is outstanding, get it lodged, and negotiate a payment arrangement if there is a debt. Leaving it alone is the only approach that reliably makes it worse.

Do I need to come into your Myrtle Bank office?

Only if you want to. Plenty of our Adelaide clients prefer to meet in person and we are glad to see them — there is parking at the door. Others send everything through digitally and we handle it by phone and email. Both work equally well.

Can you help with an ATO audit or review?

Yes. We deal with the ATO on your behalf, prepare the response and manage the correspondence. Having a chartered accountant handle it generally produces a calmer and faster outcome than trying to answer it yourself.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment?

Your last lodged tax return, income statements or payment summaries, details of any investments or rental properties, and a rough list of work-related expenses. If you are a business owner, bring access to your accounting file. If you are missing something we will find it.

Get the right tax strategy

It’s an unfortunate reality that most people are reactive when it comes to tax. They work incredibly hard, a big chunk of tax comes out of their pay packet, and there’s nothing they can do about it. But that’s where they’re wrong.

With the right tax strategy, you could save thousands of dollars (or much more) every year. There’s no tricks, games or playing cat and mouse with the ATO - it’s about working with a savvy accountant to put a plan in place that ensures you’re not paying more tax than you have to.

Get the right tax structures

How you structure your finances and business has a big impact on your tax. The right structure means you have thousands, the wrong structure is extremely costly. Depending on your circumstances, you could use a discretionary trust, a company or superannuation to set yourself up for success. Your accountant will work through your options and advise your on the best way forward.

Meet your obligations

All of us have tax obligations that we’re required to meet, whether you’re new to the workforce, a well paid doctor or the owner of a fast growing business. And when you’re focused on your career or growing your company, things can get messy quickly.

How do I handle reporting? When is my payment to the ATO due? How much? What happens if I miss the due date? Your accountant ensures that you don’t miss any of the key details.

Get peace of mind

There are few things more stressful than facing tax headaches alone. The tax experts at Nitschke Nancarrow come alongside you, put you on the right path, handle all of the confusing administration, and take the burden off your shoulders.
